War-date Confederate soldier's letter signed "W. B. Stewart," 2pp., 4to, New Madrid, Missouri, August 13, 1861, to his mother, location unknown, reading, in part, "We received orders to be ready to march in a day or so…I have no shoes to weare but I got an order from the Colonel to get some if there is any in the Quarter Masters Department…probably we will join General Hardee and make an attack upon St. Louis. We heard that there was 30,000 men coming down upon us when we retreated down as far as Point Pleasant…there scouts were seen all around New Madrid." Usual folds, very good.
