An unusual Confederate soldier's folk art letter, 1p. folio, crafted and written by Pvt. Isaac Carroll Cox, Co. F, 29th Virginia Infantry, Trulowe [?], Tazewell County, [West] Virginia, June 29, 1862, in part: "Dier Affectionate Wife, I take the pleasant method of sending you a few lines…I am well at this time hoping when these few lines come to hand they will fin you in…the best of health. I received your kind letter last evening…we had the hardest march to Princeton [West Virginia] and back that I ever had. We was ordered to cook 4 days rashons the other day and then we started and was gone to days and a half from our camps. We was march in 4 miles of Princeton and there we stayed in the woods for two days and 3 nits and then…returned to our camps. It made my feet very soar. You wanted to no what had become of bill. He is still at Jefferson [Virginia] [?] the horse pistol yet. I hant herd from him in a least 2 weeks…I am going to try to come home…if I can but I don't no…your husband un tell deth…". Isaac C. Cox (1843-1925) enlisted as private in the 29th Virginia at Saltville, Va., on April 3, 1862. He was promoted corporal during the war. The 29th fought primarily in Western Virginia and Kentucky during their service until they joined the Army of Northern Virginia at Cold Harbor and Bermuda Hundred in May 1864. He and his wife, Charlotte Newman Cox (1834-1911), lived in Carroll County, Virginia after the war. They had five children, two of whom where born during the war. The couple are now buried in Newman Cemetery, Riverhill, Virginia. VG
