A great war-date Confederate soldier's battle letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Corp. William Collier Winn, Co. D, 3rd South carolina Vol. Battalion [MWIA Spotsylvania], "near Germantown, Va., Sept. 2, 1862, in part: "Since…Richmond we have been on the march or engaged in battle. The battlefield of Manassas is a thrice fought one. A great battle was fought there by Gen. Jackson's forces and another on Saturday by Gen. Longstreet's…brother John was wounded on Friday. I have not learned the natter of his wound…it is in a dangerous place, through one of his testicles and a flesh wound through the thick part of the thigh…he was carried, Sgt. Willis informs me, to a hospital near the battlefield and he…would be sent to RichmondI passed through the most terrific storm of grape, canister and minnie balls…without a scratch. Our Batl. lost no men and none severely wounded. [Lipman George] Balle [WIA Chickamauga] the little tailor was the only man wounded in our Company. We have been under fire many times…we have been driving back the insolent Yankees, but have…escaped so far. The enemy is sorely beaten and driven back from every position he has taken. We have killed and captured several brigadiers and Major gen. Kearney, a maj. gen. was killed in an engagement here…yesterday and fell into our hands…we are preparing for a march or an attack on Washington. I saw Capt. fairly this morning…he is safe…but had his fine horse killed under him. Capt. Barksdale was wounded in the same fight with John-he lost half his men-killed and wounded…we may soon bring our enemy to terms of peace…we are on the march and will be as long as we can drive the enemy before us. I want clothing…our knapsacks were all left behind and we will perhaps move on. I never was so dirty before. I am nearly barefooted too…". VG
