A good war-date Confederate cavalryman's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Thomas R. Martin [WIA Five Forks,Va. April 1, 65], Co. F, 10th Virginia Cavalry, Gordonsville, [Va.], May 7, 1863 on hiding from Union forces while they destroyed Trevilivan Station: "… on Thursday I started with the Co to Raccoon ford when I had got about half way my main broke down & I had to walk all the way back. The Yankees came to Trevellians Saturday morning & I left about the same time & went out in the country & stayed there till next day & came back to the depot the Feds having left. I came up to Gordonsville Tuesday Morning. The Feds came back to the depot the same evening & destroyed all our company baggage… took two of the Co prisoners & I expect our Captain as he was there & hasten' been heard from since. … I have no horse fit to ride & have to be doing nothing when the boys are winning both honor & arms of every description. Five of our Co. on Saturday held the Yankees in check at Trevellians for 4 hours & charged them 3 times & Tuesday a scouting party went out & yesterday brought in 7 prisoners & 8 Horses & 5 of the prisoners were taken by two of our Co who were there. If you can possibly do so please send me a horse immediately…". VG
