Confederate soldier's war-date letter signed "Joseph H.," 4pp., 8vo, "Camp Shenandoah," April 11 - 14, 1862, to a "Miss Pem," reading, in part, "…I must stop writing at present, I am ordered to go on a scout to hunt up the Yankies…as we were going up the mountain the Yankies were in ambush…they fell back and we run the rascals over the mountain to Monteray. They turned their canon on us and made the grapeshot & bombshells fly but we got out of the way pretty soon…We are expecting an attack every day. If they do come here some of them will get hurt before they return. We have twelve big guns and about five thousand infantry…News came in last night that we had gained several great victorys, taken 8 thousand prisoners in Mississippi…the Yankies advances on us so we concluded to stop here and keep them back if we can and will do it if a large force will not come against us…I shall be glad to hear from you soon. Direct to Camp Shenandoah, 25th Va. Regiment…". Sound paper, very good.
