Confederate officer's letter by Major Eugene Blackford, 5th Alabama Infantry, "Hd. Qrs 5th Ala. Regt. Near Grace Church," May 7, 1863, 4pp., 8vo, to his father, Lynchburg, Virginia, reading, in part, "…General Rodes sent for me…and directed me to make an armed reconnaissance of the enemy's works. This I did with my battalion of sharpshooters…we advanced to within a few hundred yds. Of their position - this drew upon us a tremendous fire of grape, canister & musketry, from which I withdrew my men as speedily as possible, tho not without considerable loss…The General seemed much pleased with my report & I returned fully satisfied the enemy were there in force. Our loss on Sunday, which was the day of the great battle, was very heavy, being considerably over 250…Tuesday night the enemy went over the river. At sunrise I went forward with skirmishers, took an abundance of stragglers & saw the back of Joe's army crossing over…". Fine condition.
