Confederate officer's letter by Major Eugene Blackford, 5th Alabama Infantry, "Hd. Qrs 5th Ala. Regt. Near 'Santee' Caroline County Va," May 26, 1863, 4pp., 4to, to his mother, Mary Blackford, Lynchburg, Virginia, reading, in part, "…I never saw so marked a change as what has come over this Division in the last six weeks…there is no time at which the minds of men are more impressible especially such as one as we have just gone through…Col. Hall is my tent fighting the battle of Chancellorsville for the 1000th time so I have betaken myself to the woods…I am very sanguine as to our ultimate success at Vicksburg. Grant has placed himself in a very perilous position, and it seems to me if the city is rationed for a few weeks, nothing will be easier than for Gen. Johnston to cut him off entirely. Grant will have to attack our men in entrenchments every time, and this is a waste of time as well as of life if our men there are of the same stuff with there in Lee's Army. The confidence in that general is very great in this army, none will believe he can be defeated by such a man as Grant…I can't help feeling a little sorry sometimes for these miserable Yankees, they know that they will be whipt…" Very good condition.
