Confederate officer's letter by then-Captain Eugene Blackford, Co. "A," 5th Alabama Infantry, "Battle Field near Richmond," June 1st (1862), one page on captured U. S, Military Telegraph sheet, 8vo, to "Mary," reading, "By the mercy of God I can now live 22 of the 56 men I took into battle yesterday were killed & wounded. I behaved well I believe so I am told. My men behaved nobly , we took a yankee camp. 18 of my men were killed around me in three quarters of an hour. I have three bullet holes through my clothes, and one cut off my haversack." Lightly faded pencil, else very good condition.
