Confederate officer's war-date letter by Captain and Acting Quartermaster Charles A. Redd, 46th Alabama Infantry, 2pp., 4to, "Camp near foot Lookout Mountain, November 12, 1863, to a sibling, reading , in part, "…we are now camped near the base of that mountain which bids fair to become famous in this war. It is a grand and sublime sight to stand upon Lookout point and view the positions of the two mighty armies that any day may meet in deadly conflict. Chattanooga & its immediate vicinity is dotted so thickly with Yankee tents that it resembles a snow scene…all along the base of Missionary Ridge & Lookout Mountain our Army is entrenched…I have to the conclusion from personal observation that the great battle of this revolution will not be fought in the Valley of Chattanooga as many suppose. The Yankees are too strongly entrenched for us to attack them and were they to attack us, they would get a most terrible whipping…there will be a flank movement by one or the other side & hence a 'change in the base of operations.' I would not be surprised if we don't have to fall back from our present position. I have not yet had the opportunity of visiting the celebrated battlefield of Chickamauga-- though I intend doing so at as early a day as possible. I never had the privilege of riding over a hard-fought battlefield-for all that I have seen, the Yankees were victorious & we had to get away the best we could…" Very good.
