Confederate soldier's war-date letter by Private Wesley L. Bumgarner, Co. "H," 18th North Carolina Infantry, one page, 4to, Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, June 26, 1863, to his parents, reading in part, "…I am only tolerably well at this time. I give out on the march and was sent to Richmond…Cousin James Bullis, he give out too and was sent to Staunton…The Regiment went to Maryland and all them that were not able to keep up, they sent them back to the hospital. The Regiment is in Maryland now and fighting everyday or so. I expect to go to my Regiment in a few days, if I don't get any worse than I am at this time…I may have to do some fighting here before I fear, for the Yankees is coming up James River…" Private Bumgarner likely did not make it back to his regiment in time for Gettysburg. He did return, however, and was captured the following year on May 12th at Spotsylvania Court House. Subsequently languishing at Point Lookout prison, Bumganer died of disease. Some minor loss along left margin, else very good.
