Confederate officer's war-date letter by Captain Peyton B. Gravely, Co. "F," 42nd Virginia Infantry, 4pp., 8vo, Caroline County, Virginia, January 1, 1863, to "Joe," reading, in part, "…Well, the Fredericksburg battle was fought & Burnside easily whipped. One of our greatest & most decisive victories of the war…My Company came out remarkably well & behaved well. There was only one casualty in it. Ferdie received a severe wound in his right elbow, but his Pa was here yesterday & says he is doing well…I should have like very much to have been with you at the concert at Lambkins. I guess you enjoyed yourself very much. Miss Bucktrout is doubtless dear (deer) meat by a little fishy about the tail (of her name)…That Devilish Minister…drank up my brandy & went back home…I hope they get him in Castle Thunder, it is the right place for him…" Captain Gravely would be wounded at Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Fisher's Hill, however did survive the war and returned to his home in Henry County, Virginia. His letter is in very good condition.
