Texas Confederate Can't Find Snuff in San Antonio Confederate soldier's partial letter, written by 2nd Lt. John B. Hancock, 12th Texas Cavalry, 4 pp. (missing top half of one leaf), 8vo., no place or date, to wife Sarah, reading , in part, "…I am out on detached service and have been 10 days at this place, for the purpose of guarding the crossing of this river and looking out for blockader and other fed vessels coming…We do not get much news here except from northern papers. They report a fite at Charleston…afraid for their expedition on Vicksburg and Yazoo River…The was no snuff at San Antonio that I could purchase and there was said to have (been) crates there…I like the service tolerable well, except that were are entirely away from white folks…". The 12th Texas Cavalry served in Trans-Mississippi theaters throughout the war, mustering out on May 26, 1865. Loss and browning, fair condition. ... plus, Texas Rebel Refers to Maximilian in Mexico, Confederate soldier's partial letter, written by 2nd Lt. John B. Hancock, 12th Texas Cavalry, 2pp., 4to, "Camp Carricitos, 25 miles above Brownsville," June 17, 1863, to his wife Sarah, reading, in part, "…There is some cases of dungee (sic) fever in Brownsville, Colonel Duff has it, but is getting better…we haven't got any late nuse except that France has taken the sity of Mexico…wife, I flattered myself that I could get to come home with brother Moore, but could not. I went to see Colonel Wheat about it this morning and he said it was out of his power, but he was looking for General Bee back in 2 or 3 weeks and he intended to get permission to furlough a number from the company and I should be the first. Tell Will to look our for that substitute. I will pay anything reasonable…" Deep brown toning, else good condition. ...plus, Texas Confederate Ready For Action With New Six Shooter, Confederate soldier's partial letter, written by 2nd Lt. John B. Hancock, 12th Texas Cavalry, 2pp., 4to, "Camp on the levee near Texanna," December 10, 1863, to his wife Sarah, reading, in part, "….The enemy are said to be landing in some force at Saluda…There is said to be a number of vessels at different places on our coast…I do not think they will be able to advance fair into our country soon…I have a new six shooter, which taken all my specie. We have not been paid anything yet…" a few pinholes, stains and creases, good condition.
