Confederate civilian letter signed "John," 4pp., 4to, Savannah, Georgia, July 29, 1863, to "Scila," location unknown, reading, in part, "…We had quite a little affair of excitement in the city this morning. What do you think? In the market one curious butcher accused another of selling a dog for mutton from his stall; and the poor fellow with his doubtful carcass was made to parade up to the Mayor's Court. The fact becoming known, quite a crowd assembled in front of the Exchange and the solemn investigation began. One witness testified he saw dog hair, another that the animal's forefoot were like those of a dog, that its teeth were similar and others that the butcher was a rascal. It seemed that he had dispose of two dogs before he was discovered and the vengeance of the duped purchasers knew no bounds. The crowd increased and became restive. What was to be done? After a careful examination the verdict of "Poor Sheep" was rendered and the prisoner released to the infinite wrath of many present…" Crisp and clear, fine condition.
