A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by a certain "J. I. L.", "Camp near Carter's farm, near Richmond, June 3, 1864", to his mother, in part: "…we are stationed in the fortifications near R__d and have orders to move out at a minutes warning…as you have gotten settled up in L[ynchbur]g…you had better stay there, although I think theres no chance of the falling R__d yet…you all are better off in L__g then you would be in R__d. Starvation here [but] we boys do very well with what we get meal & middling nothing else-a gill of molasses once a week. Most of us are rather in disorder about our stomachs, but hope it will soon wear off. [There was] heavy firing heard today & last night in the direction of Lee's army. No doubt a heavy battle but I don't think a general engagement, this is a splendid day for fighting, rains a little once in while. I heard just now that we gave the Yankees a pretty genteel cheesing yesterday. Ewell's command took 500 prisoners…". Fine
