A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George O. Conrad, Co. I, 14th Virginia Cavalry [mayor of Harrisonburg, Va. postwar], "Camp near Little Washington, Rappahannock C. H., Va., Nov. 10, 1864, in part: "We crossed the mountain…we have ever since [been] guarding a wagon train sent here for forage. We have seen no Yankees…we have had plenty of corn for our horses…they issued us corn meal…I have had to stand on the out side picket post one rainy night…the citizens seem to treat us kindly and we would prefer staying here, but we have orders to move this morning, going back over into the Page Valley and perhaps the whole army may fall back up the valley…my hands are very sore and I can get no glycerine to put on them. There is a wagon up there somewhere gone up to Churchville…after baggage &…when that wagon would pass through Harrisonburg you cloud send me my boots…in camp we are entirely cut off from getting any news…oh that this outrageous war could end and let us come home. There is no place like home to me. I hope you will become quite a good manager while I am from home and make farmers out of the Boys. Don't let them be idle. Idleness is ruin. Tell me how the wheat looks…how the corn is turning out…I found my frying pan in the Rock Bridge Cavalry…we have sent for the pickets [and] will leave here in a few minutes…". VG
