A great group of three war-date Confederate soldier's letters, totaling six pages, 4to., written by Pvt. William T. Morgan, Co. E, 12th Virginia, on rare "Medical Director's Office, A. N. Va.", stationery (crossed out), Elleray, Albemarle Co., Va., Sept. 6, 1864, in part: "…there is one thing I very much miss, it is the shelling all is so quite…there was a very heavy shelling the Sunday after I left Petersburg. I hope none of the missiles reached our neighborhood and you did not become demoralized…[Sept. 14, 64]…I have seen the Yankees. You of course heard of Genl. early's defeat in the Valley. Well John and myself saddled our horses and went to look after things and had quite an exciting and interesting time of it in the independent bushwhacking stile…when the enemy retreated after following them some distance we returned to Elleray and have been since devoting ourselves to the girls, and there are very many being pleasant ones in this country…I have not fallen in love…[Sept. 21, 64]…we had quite an excitement yesterday, it was reported the enemy was approaching Charlottesville. The people all turned out to meet them but they did not make that appearance. I rode 40 miles that day on a scouting expedition in company with John & James Timberlake and two other. It did not make me sick…I hope the shells have not disturbed you much lately…my furlough is nearly out…". Also included is the original double five-cent Jeff Davis stamped transmittal cover with manuscript cancel from Greenwood Depot, Va. Overall VG
