A rare war-date Confederate military foundry letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by F. B. Deane, Jr., of Deane & Son Foundry, Lynchburg, Nov. 23, 1864 requesting from Brig. Gen. John Echols permission to transport pork by railroad for the foundry's stores, in part: "I wish to get permission to transport on the Va. & Tenn. RR twenty thousand pounds of pork purchased within the military department under your command. This pork is required for my family & for the hands employed in my iron works in this city…I manufacture shot & shell for the Confederate Govnt.; with the exception of two thousand pounds for the family of Richard H. Cunningham…having been driven from his home in Culpeper County by the public enemy…the pork about 5000 pounds will be delivered at Central Depot…". On a separate tipped page General JOHN ECHOLS (1823-1896) pens an eight line endorsement adding rank, in part: "Head Quarters Dublin, Nov. 28, 64…My. Deane is an [?] manufacturer of shot & shell for the Gov't. and these supplies are no doubt necessary for the conduct of his establishment and the subsistence of his family…". The firm of Deane & Son, Lynchburg is indeed credited with manufacturing many cannon and ordnance for the Confederacy. For an example on August 16, 1862 they contracted with the Navy Department for 4000 tons of shot and shell. Fine
