Confederate civilian's war-date letter by A. A. Marsteller, Arellton, Prince William Co., Virginia, March 22, 1864, 4pp., 8vo, with hand-carried cover addressed to his son of the same name, "Virginia Cavalry 4th Reg. Black Horse," reading, in part, "…we are always in great anxiety about you during your absence, in the perilous situation you are in…You have no doubt heard that 'some one or ones' have killed the one armed Yankee spy . It was first reported that you and W. Balch committed the act. Since, tis said the Yankees did it. Whoever did it, he sure deserved his fate. I thot him so dangerous in the neighborhood that I rejoiced at it…Further evidence of the guilt of the one armed negro, his child come over one day with Julia, presently Moseby & several rode up, the next morning a squad of Yankees was at the Doctor's, Chalmers asked them if they were coming here, they replied no Moseby was there yesterday. Who told them that night? Again, one of the Manuels was a prisoner, and heard the officers among themselves talking of a one armed negro telling that Robert was here..." Very good condition, even better content.
