War-date Confederate letter by unknown soldier, 2pp., 4to, "Camp of the 29th Va Reg't, near Hanover Junction, Va, May 22, 1864, to his siblings, reading, in part, "…I am yet among the land of living…This is 19 days that there has not bin a day's rest for us. I have not slept but one night in that time and then I laid with my cartage box on…left N. C. on the 3 of May and has bin in Battle line all the time since…on the 16th there was a general engagement all around the line…I visited the battlefield the next day. There was dead men as far as I could see everyway…Our Reg't lost in killed and wounded, 119. Our Co. lost killed: Sergt. Griggs Dixson, D. F. Prim, Ivey Melton, Henry Frost; wounded: Capt. Robinson - mortally, J. M. Farmer - arm broke, Wm. Mabe - slightly, Ira Melton - arm off, H. F. Stoneman - slightly, J. N. Coalson - bad, Anderson Smithers - bad, Thomas Burnett - hert with spent ball…it was a hot time as sertain as I love egg custard…But he Yankees got it…I seen them lay in piles 20 in a place. There loss was said to be 900 killed, 1500 wounded, 1500 prisoners…We run them about 8 miles to James River, under shelter of there gunboats…I expect we will fortify near here and fight them again…".
