Confederate officer's war-date letter by Captain and Acting Quartermaster Charles A. Redd, 46th Alabama Infantry, 4pp., 4to, "Camp near Dalton, Ga.," March 7, 1864, to his sister, Eugenia Weems, Macon County, Alabama, with original postal cover having a 10-cent CSA #12 stamp tied by a Macon, Georgia cds, it reads, in part, "…The last place to find out anything in regard to the momentous and stirring events that are daily and almost hourly transpiring around us in the Army…we concluded the fourth year of the war was about to open upon us with all its fury, and that soon the hills and streams of the Empire State of the South would be drenched and flowing with blood. General Grant supposed that this Army had been so reduced by sending reinforcements to our little heroic band in the west, we would not be able to resist his onward march. He was greatly mistaken, for instead of retreating General Johnston marched out to meet the enemy and boldly offered him battle…Although devoid of any material results in the way of prisoners or stores, the march effect has been worth ten thousand men to our Army. It has given the troops unlimited and unbounded confidence…We may not be victors, but our deeds written or rather traced with the blood of thousands of slaughtered Yankees. So far the events of 1864 have been very auspicious to our cause. Charleston still eludes their grasp and Sumpter (sic) stands out boldly and grandly even in ruins. Sherman has been compelled to retrace his steps. Grant retires behind his trenches at Chattanooga and the enemy in Florida have met with a most bloody repulse…It is a shame to see how thousands who before the war broke out were bitter secessionists and avowed fire eaters are now evading the service…hiding behind some petty government contract…If with our numbers and resources we can be conquered we are unworthy of the race from which we sprung and unworthy of freedom…" Very good.
