Confederate soldier's letter signed "B," 4pp., oblong 8vo, "Hospital 2nd Corps, A. N. Va., Orange C. H. Va, April 20, 1864, to wife in unknown location, likely North Carolina, reading, in part, "…The army is still in winter quarters, but how long the present rate of inaction will continue perhaps no one can tell. I do not know whether Grant will come over and attack us, or whether our army will attack him…Yesterday the chaplain's meeting was held. I am unable to state the number of chaplains and missionaries laboring in this army. One of them is now in our Hospital - he has the Small Pox. I have not been able to see him, and I do not know that it would be best, under the circumstances, for me to do so…I have sent my box to Salisbury." The writer's tone suggests that he might be an army surgeon. Light browning and stains, very good condition.
