A good Confederate POW letter, 1p. 8vo., written by Pvt. John A. Liggat [also Liggott], Co. E, 8th Virginia Vols., "Point Lookout, Md., June 6, 1865 addressed to a certain Alfred S. Lee, in part: "Can you give me any information about my sister and her family in Lynchburg? I have not heard one word from them since 1st April and have written…very often…I feel the greatest anxiety to hear. A good many letters been recd. by others from the Burg; generally postmarked "Old Point Comfort" or "Washington"…can I hear of my people in any way? Do let me hear how they are and whether they are all still in the land of the living. It is the only thing that disturbs me in my captivity-could I only hear that all was right at home. I could bear my imprisonment with entire composure and quietly await the day of my deliverance-hot as the weather is…[tell me] please, whether Mr. Palmer ever recd. my letters on the subject of 'special application for release'. I…would be very glad to know if any move has been made by him or any folks in regard [?]. All the boys are well…". On the verso is a note that Alfred Lee will attend to questions soon. Liggott was captured April 6, 1865 at Burkeville, Virginia and was released weeks after writing this letter by taking the Oath of Allegiance on June 14. Fine.
