HILL, Daniel H. (1821-1889) Lt. General CSA. Distinguished at Big Bethel, June 10, 1861. Commanding General, C.S. Army of the Peninsula, 1861; Commanding General, C.S. Army of Tennessee, 1865. Commandant of the North Carolina Military Institute before the war. Autograph Endorsement Signed “D H Hill, Maj. Gen’l” on the reverse of a General Beauregard’s AAG John Otey’s letter, February 19, 1865 regarding troop movements. In part, “General Beauregard directs that your two corps be concentrated as soon as possible ... move as rapidly as possible by the best routes to Statesburg or Mancehster, S. C., and thence by rail, via Florence, S. C., and Wilmington, to Greensborough, N. C ... You will not fail to communicate with these headquarters by telegraph immediately upon your arrival at the first telegraph station.” Hill has a lengthy response on the reverse February 23rd, in part “...I ordered Iverson yesterday by telegraph to Aiken to make a reconnoiter ... If the Yankees have left Columbia our troops arriving should take that route to Kingsville. I judge that Sherman is dashing on and that no stand will be made at Charlotte. ... I will still be 1st Gen in front of the Yankees. Reply, D H Hill, Maj. Gen’l.”
