Confederate officer's war-date letter by 1st Lt. Bryant Jones, Co. "E," 1st Confederate Cavalry, one page, 4to, Fort Delaware, April 11, 1865, with postal cover addressed to E. G. Booth, Philadelphia, reading, "The circumstances in which I am placed I offer as an apology for this intrusion. I am a prisoner of war & for the want of clothing & I am in an almost destitute condition. Hence my appeal to your generosity. You would confer an inestimable favour by responding to my appeal for the following articles of clothing, viz, 1 coat size 34 ½, pants 32 x 33, vest - 29, shoes small 6, hat 7 ¼, 2 drawers, 2 shirts, & underclothing. Enclose the articles in a traveling valise as I expect to be on my way home soon. Hoping to hear from you soon as I am very respectfully your friend." Philadelphia physician Edwin Gilliam Booth was Virginia-born and had two sons in the Confederate Army. Given his deep ties to the Old Dominion, Booth would offer material assistance to Confederate POWs whenever possible. Letter and cover in very good condition.
