A nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George Bright, Co. I, 11th Illinois Vols., on Daniel Webster patriotic stationery, with the legend: "Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable. Webster.", published by Mumford & Co., Cincinnati, "Bird's Point, [Mo.], Nov. 1, 1861", to his sister, in part: "…there is not any fighting done yet…we have a splendid camp on a beautiful plantation of Old Bird's. There is now six regiments here and more expected this week. There is a good many good looking young lieutenants here. I think you would enjoy yourself first rate…for a day or two…there is also two other camps in sight. Camp Holt over the river…on the Kentucky shore and on the Ill. [side]…Cairo with strong forces and five gunboats in the river. it looks very much like war but somehow they don't pick their flint. The enemy sometimes come within eight miles of us, that is their cavalry and have a brush with ours…they get the worst of it all the time. The entrenchments here is two miles long and cannon planted every hundred ids or so all along them. We are good for fifty thousand Rebels here…there is forty thousand down at Columbus, but they will not come here. I wish they would. We would give them a warm resection…there is about six deaths each day in Camp Lyon…". Also included is the original stamped patriotic published by Pease, Centralia, Missouri. VG
