A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George Bright, Co. I, 11th Illinois Vols., "Jackson, Tenn., June 12, 1862", to his sister, in part: "…we are camp in Jackson a beautiful country village…two rail roads passes through the town. there was secesh soldiers here, But when they heard of our coming they left. The majority of the citizens are cesesh. The ladies kept themselves locked up in their houses for three days after our arrival. But now they come out and looks around. Some of them are very well pleased as they find our soldiers behaves better than their own…one woman asked one of our boys if he was a yankee. He said yes, said she I thought they were little men all covered with hair. She asked if they were all like him [as] they were so much better looking than the Southern men. Some of them are very ignorant, some very nice handsome young ladies…the ladies up north can out shine them…we was expecting an attack night before last some of our cavalry was coming from Bethel. Our pickets halted them but they did not hear and came on. Our pickets fired and killed one man, but the beseech did not come…we are going on picket to night…". VG
