A large war-date printed map of Northern Virginia, 38" x 26", boldly entitled: "War Telegram Marking Map", published by Louis Prang, Boston, 1862. This map was originally made with the idea of keeping track of the progress of the armies that faced one another in Northern Virginia. An explanation at the lower left explains the map's usefulness in the following terms, in part: "The extraordinary large scale on which this map is drawn has been adapted to make it…the most distinct Map ever published of the whole Virginia Territory where the decisive battles for the Union will be fought…[it] is a map to mark the change of positions of the Union forces in Red Pencil and the Rebel Forces in Blue, on the receipt of Every Telegram from the seat of war…the pencils…should be used with a light hand to enable obliterating the marks with…soft bread…this Map [is] a welcome companion to every person interested in the pending struggle of our Nation…". Most certainly used in early 1862 since there are red marking for the Union positions clearly visible at Yorktown, Hampton and Norfolk in the south and Fairfax, Fredericksburg and Centerville in the north. While blue markings around Richmond, Petersburg and Fredericksburg (opposite the Federals) appear for the Confederate positions. Minor chips at margins, with expected wear, else VG.
