A great pair of 5th Vermont related items being Lt. Col. Ronald Kennedy's [WIA Salem Heights, Va., May 4, 1863] early postwar manuscript account of his war service and his 1862 3rd Vermont second lieutenant's commission. His personal military memoirs, 2 1/4pp. large folio, is simply titled: "Col. R. Kennedy 5th Vt. Vet. Vols." and reads, in very small part: " Enlisted at West Concord, Vt. as private about May 14th 1861. Was the first to enlist from the town…after the battle Gettysburg while our regt. was doing duty in N. Y. City I was acting adjutant of the 3rd regt...was on continuous duty during the leadership of Burnside, Hooker & Meade & Grant…having being promoted to Capt during the time. At the battle of Cold Harbor I lost one second Lieut. H. W. Miller and a third of enlisted men and was in command of four companies…I received commission as Lt. Col. of this regt. February 26th 1865. Was in action with the regt…while supporting picket line at 3 am we repulsed a charge of the enemy…in the ground assault on April 2nd on the works I had the honor to command the leading regiment & claim that Capt. G. C. Gould 5th Vt. Vet. Vols. was the first man on the works. I have the honor of commanding at the close of the war the only 'Vt. Vet.' regt. I also claim that I commanded at the close of the wrath first regt. that reveteranized…". More. VG. Kennedy's partly-printed Vermont State appointment is printed on velum, 1p. oblong folio, reads, in part: "The Freemen of the State of Vermont. By His Excellency, FREDERICK HOLBROOK…to Ronald A. Kennedy…having been appointed Second Lieutenant of Company D, in the 3rd Regiment of Infantry…you will, therefore, carefully…discharge said duty…Twenty second day of September…One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty Two…". Signed and made official by Vermont Governor Frederick Holbrook and Military Secretary Samuel Williams while Kennedy is sworn into service by Lt. Leonard Martin 5th US Light Artillery.
