Union officer's war-date letter by 1st Lt. Frank J Crawford, Co. "E," 53rd Illinois Infantry, 2pp., 4to, Bolivar, Tennessee, October 8, 1862, to a "Dr. Father Richardson," n.p., reading in part, "…you may know that I am safe through the battle of Hatchie river fought on last Sunday…Our Division marched in last Sunday to the relief of Gen. Rosencrans, attacked by Price and VanDorn at Corinth. We encountered 18,000 rebels at the crossing of Hatchie river…we had only 6000 men. We defeated the enemy, captured several of his guns and many prisoners. The 53rd behaved gloriously. It lost about 65 killed and wounded. Lieut Price, son of Mrs. Price of Grand Rapids, was killed instantly by a musket ball through the heart early in 'the action'…" Very good condition.
