War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by John Manear, Co. D, 14th West Virginia Infantry, KIA Winchester, 4pp. octavo, December 26, 1862, on “The Star Spangled Banner” lettersheet, it reads in part: “...We gad a vert drt Christmas and I want you to send me some things so I can have my Christmas right...” Fine condition. The 14th West Virginia was organized at Wheeling in western Virginia on August 25, 1862. .The 14th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment suffered 7 officers and 81 enlisted men killed in battle or died from wounds, and 1 officer and 157 enlisted men dead from disease for a total of 170 fatalities. The regiment was mustered out on June 28, 1865.
