An extremely rare war-date Union soldier's sweet heart carte de visit that was found in the dead hands of a New York soldier at Antietam near the Sunken Road. The story of Private Amos Humiston who was killed at Gettysburg is well known. His unidentified body was ided because of the image of his children found in his dead hands. His story touches the hearts of all Civil War collectors and historians. The CDV offered here is of a well-dressed woman, published by Weston's Gallery, New York City. It has been badly worn with abrasions and rounded edges indicating that the original owner of this CDV constantly carried it with him on the march and in battle. Unfortunately, this unlucky warrior was mortally wounded near the Sunken Road at Antietam dying later that day or sometime during the night. The day following the battle Pvt. James Reynolds of the Irish Brigade was combing the battlefield and found this image in the dead hands of a soldier whose last thought were of his faraway sweet heart. The image is inscribed on the verso, in full: "James Reynolds, Co. A, 88th Regt. N. Y. V. Irish Brigade. New York. Found on the battle ground of Antietam in the hand of a dead soldier. Thursday Sept. 18th, 186[2]." This image is a true piece of American military history and is the first one we have ever offered which can be claimed to have been looked upon as a true military hero was dying. Condition does not matter, but has wear.
