A great war-date Confederate officer's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Captain Daniel Norwood Speer, 60th Georgia Infantry, "near Sharpsville, Md., 18th Sept. 1862, tallying his unit's losses received during the battle of Antietam while battling Doubleday's men outside the West Woods, in part: "I write in the lull of another great battle. Since I last wrote Harper Ferry, garrisoned by 12000 United States troops has surrendered to our (Jackson's) army... our whole Va & Valley army has for two days fought the combined Yankee army; they fought until late last night and today both combatants seem too much exhausted to resume the attack. Our Brigd & Regt as usual suffered severely. Genl Lawton is wounded, Col. Douglas of our Brigd is killed, Adj. Davis Hill is missing & supposed killed, Lieuts. Heard & Cartright wounded (slightly). Abb. Harris, Enoch Jackson, Wm. Corviss…are wounded & I have got them with a nice family near Sheperdstown, Va….Maj. Robt. Smith 4th Ga. is killed, Tom Cartright killed, Jim Wilkinson killed…Dr. Long arm broke many others are wounded but in the great confusion & the battle about to again open I can give no other detail…tell Dr. to collect…of David Covin $100.00 advanced to his son Kerr Covin who is wounded in the left leg. The minnie ball entering above the knee & coming out at or above the ankle…of Jas. Jackson collect $100.00 advanced to his son Enoch Jackson wounded through the thigh (severe), but neither his or Covin's bones broken…collect of Abraham Harris…advanced to his son Abb Harris wounded on the right hip by a bomb shell very severe bruise, no bone broken nor is the flesh torn. He is doing well. I got them off across the Potomac River into the country & got a good Dr. to attend them; they are receiving every attention that they could at home…we are getting up a list to telegraph…many will yet fall before the pending battle is ended…I saw the great surrender at Harpers Ferry with their bright bayonets, gory flags & pretty uniforms. We…took about 50 field pieces …". VG to near fine.
