A great Civil War relic being a nearly 8 1/2" x 1 1/2" diameter 'War Log" purportedly recovered from the Antietam Battlefield after the battle. The battle of Antietam took place 150 years ago on Sept. 17, 1862 and was fought between the forces of Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan. Casualties mounted to nearly twenty six thousand dead, wounded and missing giving it the sad remembrance of being America's "Bloodiest Day". The log which in all likelihood stood in the path of intense artillery fire contains five canister shots which are imbedded into the wood. The bark has been heavily scared and was attempting to grow around the iron balls until a zealous relic hunter cut the branch from the unfortunate tree. Remnants of an old tag is still present, but barely readable while early museum numbers remain on one side of the cut end. Obtained from an defunct Antietam museum when it deaccessioned its holdings.
