A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. James Bosworth [WIA & POW Chancellorsville], Co. D, 17th Conn. Vols., "Stafford Court House, [Va.], Jan. 14, 1863", reading, in part: "…almost everything brought into camp for sale is of an inferior quality and is double and sometimes quadruple the price paid at any market…common whiskey sells for $2.00 and $2.50 per…pint…none but old [Andrew] Jackson [would] think of paying such prices excepting commissioned officers and we dare not call them harse names although they…deserve it. We may take occasion to give them their cognomen when we get home and [we] have taken off our uniforms. They…will surely get their deserts when we can speak our minds without incurring military penalties…on Gen. McClellan I have…to say…that no leader has so much the confidence of the Army of the Potomac as does Gen. McClellan. I have conversed with numerous who have been with him from the time he took command…they all with one accord say give us Little Mack. We will go where he will lead but if such reckless generalship as that displayed by Gen. Burnside is again to be enacted we will be shot by our own men before we will give the rebels the credit of killing so many without any possible prospects of success…our quartermaster [Lt. Hanford N. Hayes, resigned July 18, 1863] has been under arrest on certain charges…and has had a trial by General Court Marshall…what the result of the trial has not yet been made public…so much of his patriotism has oozed out of his finger's end that he will go home and give his place to some one less sensitive them himself…a majority of the officers who have left Bridgeport with this and other Regts reflect but little credit on the place and have gained little honor for themselves…". Also included is the original transmittal cover. VG.
