A good war-date Union officer's letter, 6pp. 8vto., written by Capt. Henry A. Wiley, Co. B, 104th New York Vols., "Cooksville, Md., Sept. 12, 1862", in part: "…I was much pained at hearing you had heard that I was killed at Bull Run…I should have been killed or wounded as several of the officers in the left wing were killed and wounded…the lieut that had charge of my company got behind a big tree and told the boys to deploy right and left as skirmishers and they done so…my company was the most cut up…had I been there I should have led my company onto the field and stayed with them…you must have felt terrible when you heard that I was killed…I saw H. Timbrooks [WIA 2nd bull Run & Wilderness] & Dan Smith…on their way to Washington…I telegraphed as soon as I saw the report in the Tribune [Wiley's Sept. 6 telegram is included in the lot]…the same day…the Col. received a dispatch from Robert making enquiries after me…I come out to camp last Tuesday. Found the boys feeling well, what few there was of them left…it made me feel bad when I looked around and missed a good many familiar faces, but such is the consequences of war…our erg does not look to be more than two or three companies…Lieut. [Charles W.] Fisher [WIA Gettysburg] was taken prisoner at Bull Run. Lieut. Rudd killed at Bull Run, Lieuts. [John J.] McCaffrey [DOW 9/17/62] & [William L.] Trembly both wounded…[Lt. William J.] Starks is on Gen. Duryee's staff…we are now…on the road from Baltimore to Frederick. At the latter place there is reported to be a large rebel force and we shall likely have a battle there. We are about 20 miles from there…it is [Stonewall] Jackson's plane to draw us away from Washington as far as he can and then join Lee and…make a strike on Washington…they will meet with a warm reception. Where we are going I can not exactly tell…". Also included is a 8vo. Sept. 6, 1862 telegram written by Capt. Wiley on "Erie Railway Telegraph" stationery to his father, in full: "I am reported killed, have not been in any Battle, have written particulars.". Both VG
