War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William Seely, Co. B, 47th Illinois Vols. "Cornith, Miss., Jan. 24, 1863, in part: "…we received marching orders and…started for Corinth…th second day we marched until after dark…when we arrived at Bethel we found the 48th & 49th Ill…our men look much better than theirs and they have lost more men by disease than we have in battle. When we arrived at Corinth we found several Regts that have been stationed here ever since the place was evacuated by the Rebels. Yet they are to stay…while we move again…this time however we got by Rail Road. We are going to German Town about 11 miles east of Memphis…I am glad to learn that the Ball has been extracted from Jiriah's [Corp. Benjamin J. Gates, 47th Illinois, her brother] shoulder and hope by this time he is comfortable with it…". VG
