A nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. oblong 4to., on Adams Express ledger book paper, written by Sgt. Henry C. Slough, Co. E, 77th Illinois Vols., [n. p., n. d., [but Vicksburg, Miss., May 29, 1863], to his cousin Emily A. gates, in part: ….my brother soldiers…are all tired of this war. It ha cost to many valuable lives already. We have been fighting the rebels now two weeks. We have whipped them every time. We have been fighting them now five days in there fort at Vicksburg. We lost 14 killed and wounded out of our company. The captain's brother was one of the killed. Our regiment lost 130 men. How long this is going to last the lord only knows. I hope not long for if it does we will have no men left in our regiment…Henry Pratt was left behind at Carthage. He was lucky once in his life…the 47th is now with Sherman…have had some hard fighting. It is an awful sight to see the wounded coming in by hundreds and see the doctors cutting off arms and legs as if it was nothing…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Fine.
