A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Isaac D. Lodge [MWIA Battery Wagner, July 18, 1863], Co. D, 48th New York Vols., "Fort Pulaski, Georgia. Jan. 4, 1863," in part: "…we are now and have been since last May pleasantly quartered in this fort…at Port Royal Ferry we double quicked after retreating rebels on the New Years Day…at work in the Batteries of the Savannah River…we would sink to our knees in mud and cannons slipping off the plank would go to the hubs of the wheel in mud…the mosquito fleet saluted us with shot and shell we stood over ankle deep in water…last October while the brigades of Generals Terry and Brannan fought at Pocotaligo. We at Coosawhatchie attacked a train of cars and killed 15 and wounded many more, taking a prisoner and taking a Stand of Colors belonging to the Whippy Swamp Guard of South Carolina. [We were] on the formerly rebel steamer Planter taken from Charleston by the negro Robert Small. We harassed the mainland of South Carolina at times approaching within three miles of Fort Jackson on the Savannah River and have lost in these reconnaissances only one man…". Fine
