Union soldier's war-date letter by Corporal Benjamin T. Hough, Co. "K," 10th Wisconsin Infantry, 3pp., 8vo, on coarse Confederate paper, Richmond, Virginia, December 6, 1863, to "Cousin Seymour," n. p., reading, in part, "…I was taken prisoner at the Battle of Chickamauga…I would like to have a few things sent me from the north and if you would send me a box you will confer a great favor on me which I hope I may some day be able to repay. I will give you a list of things I would like. 10 lbs. Butter crackers / 6 ilbs Butter / 4 ilbs Brown sugar / 8 lbs cheese / 2 lbs salt / one paper black pepper / one lb good smoking tobacco and a pipe and a bunch or two of matches / one half quire of paper / one Doz. Envelopes / one bottle ink / Six Stamps and a lead pencil I would like a few onions any little thing you might think of that would be acceptable to a prisoner here…Direct to 4th floor Smiths building Camp Libby Richmond…" Corporal Hough would be transferred from Libby Prison to Andersonville, where he died of disease on June 26, 1864. Though in pencil, this scarce letter is boldly written and is quite legible. Very good condition.
