Union soldier's war-date letter by Private Charles E. Fowler, Battery B, 1st Ohio Light Artillery, 4pp., 8vo, Columbia, Tennessee, June 7 (no year, 1863?) to a "Friend," reading, in part, "…I sent your folks $15 and have not herd wether you ever received it…you will not here from me again this summer write as soon as you receive this & tell me wether you received the xo that I can send some mor…". Having spent 1862 either fighting in Kentucky or recovering from illnesses, Private Fowler moved with his battery into Tennessee and Alabama during the summer of 1863. His anxiety over the money is understandable as Union privates received a mere $13 per month…if they got paid. Very good condition.
