Compensation For A Gettysburg School Building Used As A Hospital A great war-date Gettysburg attorney's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by David A. Buehler (1821-1886), as secretary of Board of Director's of the Gettysburg School District (1852-1867), Gettysburg, Pa., Oct. 21, 1863 to Surgeon Henry Janes of Camp Letterman concerning compensation for damages incurred at the The Union (Public) School during its occupation as a hospital after the battle of Gettysburg, in part: "Capt. Blood is adjusting some damages to the furniture of the school buildings of 'Gettysburg School District' during its recent occupation for Hospital purposes by U. States, and today requested me to procure from you a certificate that the building was so used. Although…the repairs have been made under his direction, it seems that a surgeon's certificate is necessary to accompany the vouchers. Will you do us the favor to send us…the necessary certificate…the building was taken possession of on the 1st of July and continued in use until…about the last of August…first by Dr. [Theodore T.] Tate [3rd Penn. Cavalry] and then by Dr. [W. H.] Rulison [9th New York Cavalry] of the cavalry…I do not recollect the precise date of its vacation. You may recollect that you ordered it to be vacated upon the representation of Mr. Carson, President of the Board, and myself…your attention will most oblige the Board of Directors of Gettysburg School District…". The Union Public School was the primary public school used to educate the children of Gettysburg. At the time of the battle it enrolled nearly 400 students.
