A nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. William W. Fish, Co. C, 11th New Hampshire Vols., "Snyder's Bluff, Miss., July 27, 1863", in small part: "...we left Jackson last Monday…we…crossed the Big Black [and] just as the regt crossed a heavy shower came up…I kept dry by starting on ahead and got into an old shed where I staid till it was over…the roads were in terrible condition after the rain…Gen. Parks marched the men very hard. Many horse, mules and mended or were sunstruck…we passed immense fields of corn…many were the curses heaped on Gen. Park's head. Gill is not very smart thigh he keeps around…we have heard of the late terrible Battle at Gettysburg and the retreat of Lee…the 2nd [N. H.] has been terribly cut up. The boys are in good spirits over the late news…I was reading…an account of the riots in New York and Boston. I hope the military arm will overcome this and teach them a lesson…Jacob a darky, we have in our Co., who escaped from the Rebel army when they evacuated Jackson…met with a negro friend of his…and this darky stated…that after that army left Jackson. The whole of Johnson's artillery comprising of 57 pieces deserted with their pieces…part of the batteries were at the head of the column and as they came to where the road forked they turned off…and when the rear batteries came to the fork they halted. Johnson soon missed them and sent scouts to find them…the batteries opened on them and whipped them and kept heading for Georgia …Jacob…says he has been in the Rebel army three years being with them two or three months before the war commenced…practicing . He says there is a good deal of discontent in Johnson's army…I hope when they move this Corps from here they will take them where they will not be tramping all over creation. 'Burnside's Moving Menagerie' as it is called…our boys got many 'relics' from Jackson…I have a fancy shirt…I counted 12 different colors in it. It was in a rebel haversack I picked up as we crossed the Reb's breastworks…". VG
