A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George Bright, Co. I, 11th Illinois Vols., "Vicksburg, Miss., June 14, 1864", to his sister, in part: "…we have been out on another expedition…in which we were successful. We drove the enemy in every skirmish. Destroyed their rail road for miles. Burned about one half of Yazoo City. The march was very severe as the weather was very warm. We averaged twenty miles per day…the Red River expedition has returned and gone up the river…the boys do not speck well of Gen. Banks as a commander. They feel confident they could of taken Shreveport, La…it is possible that John C. Fremont is a copperhead. If he is a loyal man he would not of excepted the Cleveland nomination…[political] office is a great thing to some menGen. Sickles was here on Sunday from the east on tour of observation. The monument is to be erected on the 4th of July where Gen. Grant and the Rebel Pemberton held their interview last 4th…I sent…a root from the tree that was there at the time of the surrender…it has been taken away root and branch and is called by the boys Pemberton root and is kept as a relic…".
