War-date letter from the home front by Lizzie A. Shultz, 3pp., 8vo, Salem, Illinois, January 28, 1864, to her husband, with earlier cover to her husband addressed "Captain Joseph Shultz, Provost Marshal 2nd Division 15th A.C In Shermans Command," reading, in part, "…the Military Court is adjourned and all the white troops taken away and the Negro regiments left to guard the place. I should judge the people would rather squirm under that. I dread for the spring campaign to open for I fear you are then going to see the realities of a soldier's life more than ever yet…what do you think some of our copperheads here said about Mr Black being shot…it was good enough for him he had no business to be trying to arrest deserters…" Minor split on one folds, else very good condition.
