War-date Union soldier's letter by D. P. Campbell, 3pp., 8vo, Havre de Grace, Maryland, October 2, 1864, with original postal cover, to Miss Lin McMillan, New Castle, Pennsylvania, reading, in part, "…There is two companys of our regiment in Philadelphia doing gard duty…Last week there was two trains of our wounded went through here, and one train of rebel prisoners. The citizens treated the rebels better than they did our wounded, there was one of our men saw a citizen talking with some of the rebels and giving them all they wanted. They kept an eye on him and the next night he was caught and got a good whiping. The most of the inhabitants are secesh, they can not get a chance to speak these sentiments. I am glad of it…" Some stains, else very good condition.
