Late war printing of "Peace, and What it Would Cost Us. Address Delivered by Rev. T. Starr King, at Platt's Hall, Thursday Evening, August 29, 1861," one page, folio, a stirring call to arms given in San Francisco that still resonated with ardent Unionists later in the war. King, in response to those who wanted a quick and easy settlement with the Confederacy after First Manassas, stated, "…There is no peace possible unless the nation is ready for suicide…up with the old Flag from the Potomac to the Rio Grande!" His sentiments were echoed some three years later by those who wanted to bring the war to a decisive end on Union terms. King's 1861 diatribe is here followed by a current letter from U. S. Grant at City Point, Virginia in which the general urges a continued prosecution of the war since victory is at hand. Grant states, "…The rebels have now in their ranks their last man. Boys and old men are guarding prisoners and railroad bridges, and forming a good part of their garrisons for intrenched positions. Any man lost by them cannot be replaced. The have robbed the cradle and the grave equally to get their present force…they are now losing through desertions and other causes at least one regiment per day…" Chipped margins, folds and light browning, some loss to title. Overall good condition.
