A good group of Civil War documents related to the capture of Pvt. Milo H. Cooley, Co. F, 27th Mass. Vols. during Grant's Overland Campaign. The first item is a war-date American Telegraph Company telegram, 1p. 8vo., "Bermuda Hundred, [Va., May] 17, [64]", sent by Milo's brother Lt. Sherman P. Cooley to L. A. Cooley, East Granville, Mass, reading, in full: Milo is missing. I think a prisoner. I am well." VG. ...plus, The second item, is a war-date partly-printed, 1p. 8vo., written by Gardiner Tufts as agent for the Massachusetts Military State Agency, Washington, D. C., Nov. 15, 64," to Milo's wife, reading, in part: "…there is no record of your Husband Milo H. Cooley, Co. F, 27th Mass. Vols. at the Commissary Gen. of Prisoners. The Gov. here lists only of paroled or exchanged men and…those who have died in rebel hands. His name is not among those…". Near fine. ...plus, Thankfully, Milo survived the war. He had been captured on May 16, 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, Va, and was held prisoner by the Confederates until April 1865. ...plus, Also included in the group is a printed 1887 GAR roster from the Stanley Post, No. 11, New Britain, Conn., showing that Milo was part of the social committee and that he was then living at 76 Church St, New Britain…PLUS; a 1p. 4to., Department of the Interior, Pension Office letter rejecting Milo's request for pension disability with the original transmittal cover. Both VG. ...plus, Finally there are sixteen family related postwar letters and documents related to Milo's varied business adventures, family matters and social events. A majority of these letters were written by Milo's brother Sherman who gives his brother much advise about selling property. Almost all these letters have their original stamped transmittal covers. Sherman also served in the war with Milo in the 27th Mass. Vols. Interestingly, this group includes a printed 1891 "Improved Order of the Red Men" society letter and cover concerning the formation of a committee for an upcoming social event. Overall VG. (20 pieces.)
