War-date Union officer's letter, 2pp. 8vo,, written by Lieut. William H. Mickle, Co. H, 134th New York Vol., "Lookout Valley, Tennessee, November 14, 1863" describing to his sister his black servant, in part: "…O! Siss you ought to see my Darkey Ned blow the candle out just now his white eyes rolled like full moons. He struck out his great big lips & puffed like a spawn spot & his wooly head looked just like a big pumpkin covered with our old black sheepskin isn't he pretty? Wouldn't you like to have him come home & live with father? Tell James if he wants one there is one here that has got red wool on his head instead of black & would make a good blacksmith…". Raising to the rank of captain, Mickle served faithfully throughout the remainder of the war, being wounded at Gettysburg, and serving as a staff officer for Generals Howard, Hooker, and Sherman. VG
