A war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Lieut. William H. Mickle, Co. H, 134th New York Vol., "Lookout Mountain, Tenn., November 14, 1863" describing the daily affairs of the Union army during the siege of Chattanooga, in part: "…[at] the peak of Lookout Mountain…the Johnies have a Battery planted and amuse themselves by firing at us whenever they see a group of officers riding or wagon train…but the boys don't mind them anymore & sleep well at night…the Rebs are deserting from about 25 to 100 per day! Sometimes officers bring their companies along & give themselves up…they are getting enough of Rebellion. If they loose as fast for six months as they have since we came here they'll have no men to fight us…[then] I can get home to Christmas Dinner…". Original transmittal envelope included. Raising to the rank of captain, Mickle served faithfully throughout the remainder of the war, being wounded at Gettysburg, and serving as a staff officer for Generals Howard, Hooker, and Sherman. The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
