A great war-date Union officer's letter written by Chief of Artillery, 11th Corps. Lieut. William H. Mickle, 7pp. 8vo, "Office Chief of Artillery, 11th A. C., Lookout Valley, Tenn., April 12, 1864", to his wife concerning the consolidation of the 11th and 12th Corps plus a practical joke played on a comrade, in part: "…we are not consolidated as yet…I am acting in the position of chief of artillery for the 11th Corps…the Ordnance, Q. M.'s, commissary & adjutant generals department…are too much for me horseback exercise is just the thing for me…Alpheus & Aloy are the same as ever, but Aloy had a good joke cut on him recently by one of the soldiers whom Aloy got to cut his hair. The fellow did it up 'first rate' but toward the last. Aloy thought the man was a long time busy & when he arose & looked in the glass…there was a plain 'U. S.' cut on either side [of] his head so plainly that it would be noticed at some distance when his hat is off. That mark is branded on all public animals belonging to [the] government & is on all government property. Consequently, Aloy belongs to Uncle Sam in reality now…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal envelope. Raising to the rank of captain, Mickle served faithfully throughout the remainder of the war, being wounded at Gettysburg, and serving as a staff officer for Generals Howard, Hooker, and Sherman. VG
